What are Thought Forms?

Thought forms are energetic or psychic entities that are born from your thoughts and emotions. In many cases, they are vague and nebulous. For example, if you experience a feeling of love and affection for someone, those emotions may give rise to a warm-colored, star-like pattern of radiation in your psyche. In other cases, a strong thought-form can develop into a specific entity.


Your feelings of extreme anger for someone may take on the form of a wolf, demon, or another ominous being. If you devote an adequate amount of energy to that being, it can become sentient and take on a life of its own within your psyche. A thought-form is essentially an amplified version of whatever thought, feeling, or emotion it is born from.


For example, imagine you stub your toe. In that case, there is a specific, neurological cause to the pain you are experiencing. Now imagine that you focus intensely on that pain. In your mind, you begin to visualize it as a brightly colored pattern, jagged and harsh. That pattern occupies a part of your psyche and begins to amplify the pain, refusing to let you ignore it. In contrast, if you are able to create an opposing thought form – one that is soothing and pleasurable – your physical pain will begin to subside.

These thought-forms can and do influence our emotional well-being, as well as our physical health.


Our feelings, thoughts, and words have consequences because all matter is a living energy that connects to and affects everything else. We live in a web of energy that connects to each other through other vibratory planes, such as the astral and mental planes. Thus, the idea that someone can curse us, or that we can harm ourselves with our own thoughts and emotions, is not as far- fetched as others may think.


Some types of thoughtforms became enlivened with elemental nature spirits or the spirits of the dead. These types of entities, if negative, can become attracted to people who vibrate close to their own vibration. Thus, if you’re feeling sick or upset, you can attract negative thought forms into your space that compound the problem, intensifying your feelings of disease or pain.


These thoughtforms can accumulate in the auric field of the person if they don’t understand how to clear their space and work on handling their negative emotions and thoughts. In fact, negative thought forms can create a sort of dampening effect that is literally like walking around in a cloud of the negativity of your own making.


Now that we understand the connection between our thoughts and feelings as to how pain accumulates in the body via thought forms, creating ballast for bad feelings, we can actually be grateful that we do have control over the creation and subsequent dissolution of thought forms in our space. Thoughtforms do naturally dissolve when they are not fed by more of the same emotions or thoughts that created them in the first place. Although, those still floating around tend to gravitate towards individuals who will feed them their survival food of negative emotions or thoughts because they have a will to survive.

Thoughts, particularly those centering around entrenched beliefs, impact us and others in significant ways. These thoughts can form part of our physical well being and even impact the well being of those close to us or those to whom we direct thoughts. Creating Thought Forms

Thoughtforms enable a higher level of communication and a more sincere exchange of will between people. Rather than expressing thoughts in the clumsy form of communication called language, the thought-form allows the transmission of the thought’s perfect image to the recipient. The minds communicate through images, surpassing the ability of words to accurately convey the intended message. Like the spoken word, the thought form takes on a life of its own as it moves away from the creator. However, the thought form contains more permanence and impact than the spoken word.


Creating thought forms that last requires mental focus and desire. The thought form takes power from the vibrations all around it, giving rise to the shape, sound, and color of the form itself. These colors form part of our aura. Those advanced to the point where they can see and recognize the colors of our auras to understand the emotions and thoughts currently controlling any person.


Weak thoughts do not give rise to thought forms, or, if they do, they give rise to weak thought forms that disappear as quickly and efficiently as they arose. Perfunctory thoughts that occur hundreds, if not thousands of times over our lifetime, such as remembering to turn out the light before bed or bring the garbage to the road on Friday morning, produce little, if any effect. These minor and only weakly intended actions fail to produce a lasting impact.


Meaningful thoughts are used in creating thought forms. These thoughts result from powerful emotions or long-held and sincere beliefs, regardless of whether those beliefs are valid or even helpful. These thoughts vibrate into the spaces around us and cause impacts, either intentional or inadvertent, on those around us. This makes learning how to deal with thought-forms one of the most essential skills we acquire.


If we focus on someone for whom we manifest genuine affection and love, a thought form will result in energy that radiates love and kindness. The thought-form may reach the person we focus on, providing them with feelings of warmth and love. The thought-form will also radiate through the area surrounding us, filling those close enough to the thought-form with love and kindness. The thought-form will not transmit the identity or the picture of the person to whom the feelings were initially directed. The thought-form will subtly direct their feelings of love to those for whom they maintain similar levels of affection.


You can make thought forms for particular purposes. Begin with the end in mind. You should know precisely what you wish the thought-form to accomplish. Thought forms are living entities with real impacts and should not be created haphazardly.

Someone praying for the safe journey home of a parent or to keep a child safe while engaged in sport sends out protective thought forms to the parent or the child and helps keep them out of harm’s way. Even if the thinker lacks awareness of thought forms or dismisses the theory of the forms, the thought form makes its journey and performs its tasks in the same manner.


Evil thoughts can lead to malicious thought forms as inevitably, as protective thoughts lead to beneficial thought forms. The curse, a phenomenon known in every culture, is but one evil thought forms manifestations sent to a person. While not all evil thoughts succeed, just as all good thoughts do not successfully protect, the malicious thought form is generated and sent. Any evil or malicious thoughts towards a person, even by one not acquainted with thought forms, can send forth dark thought forms.

Besant and Leadbetter taught that thoughts could be perceived as colors in a person’s aura but that they also could appear as material objects, such as the image of the thinker. Their teachings provide insight into how to see thought forms.


Some thought forms may appear visible to almost anyone, even if they are not clairvoyant. Some believe that especially powerful thoughts and emotions created apparitions. If the thinker manifests their emotions and thoughts with sufficient power, the thought form may appear visible to many people. It also may last for a long time, even after the death of the thinker.


Other thought forms require a clairvoyant for viewing. For example, if your relationships are suffering, you should create a thought form that will assist in bringing about goodwill between you and anyone with whom you may be in conflict. You could also create a thought form to help you perform well at work, assuming that you create it with positive motives and intentions. Creating a thought form, even for what you perceive to be a personal gain, with unethical motives or negative emotions, leads to a dark thought-form.


Paying attention to the energy of these thought-forms, either by remaining mindful of their presence or by using meditation to harness their energy, allows you to reap the benefits of the purpose for which the thought-form was created. Working with thought-forms in this way maximizes their benefit to you, allowing you to create the life you truly desire. 

Negative Thought Forms

Note that we have considered how to create thought-forms. Thought forms can take positive or negative forms. A negative emotion, even a misdirected or internally directed negative emotion, can lead to a negative thought form vibrating through the area. Angry people can master creating thought forms with negative, malicious energy, sending them to those they despise, and possibly harming the intended recipient and others encountering the thought-form.


Therefore, negative thought forms possess the potential to harm you and others, whether you or others create them. The most straightforward example is a curse. You spend considerable time and intense mental energy wishing ill to someone else. You may even imagine the form the evil should take, giving the thought-form shape and direction.


However, your negative thoughts can also cause you harm. Thoughts such as “I hate my life” or “everything bad happens to me” or other similar variations, if repeated often enough, produce thought forms that cause you harm. You will have manifested a thought form whose purpose is to ensure that your prophecies for yourself, those bad things always happen to you, come true.


How To Address Negative Emotions


  1. You can avoid these negative thought forms by letting go of the negative emotions and replacing them with positive statements.
  2. Meditation serves as an excellent teacher for letting thoughts go. Not every thought in your head produces a powerful thought form. Only those that rise to the level of entrenched beliefs produce thought forms capable of altering your life’s trajectory.
  3. Using affirmations can supplement meditation as a defense against creating negative thought forms. Affirmations, short positive statements about the change you want in your life or the path you desire for your life, create positive thoughts to replace the negative thoughts you let go through meditation or another process. Affirmations help control the types of thought forms you accumulate around yourself and may ward off negative thought forms sent by other people by making it more challenging to receive the lower level of vibrations used by negative thought forms.

Clearing Thought Forms

Dissolving or destroying negative thought forms impacting your life is as important as gathering positive thought-forms around you. Removing negative thought forms clears space for beneficial thought forms to help attract the type of life you desire, the life that you spend time meditating on, and trying to visualize. Before you destroy the negative thought-form, you should ready the positive thought form you will use to replace it.


  1. Dissolving thought forms takes time and work. However, the path is straight forward. You should strive to deprive the thought-form of the energy it needs to succeed, placing it with the opposite energy. Thoughtforms built on pessimism and depression should be met with optimism and joy. Love works against almost any negative thought form.
  2. Directing a sufficient amount of opposite, high vibration energy to the low vibration negative thought form will eventually dislodge it from its place of influence, removing you from its influence. Once dislodged, it will try to reengage, however, if you persist with the barrage of opposite thoughts, it will eventually lose the energy it needs to survive and will disappear.
  3. You should have a positive thought form ready to replace the negative one as soon as you feel it losing its grip. This makes it more difficult for the negative thought form to reattach, easing it into its eventual dissolution. If you do not replace it, the negative thought form will have an easier time re-establishing control. You will need to start the work all over again, and this time against a more determined and entrenched opponent.

Meditation can not only teach you how to let thoughts pass through your mind without receiving undue attention; it can teach you how to let go of unnecessary beliefs and replace them with peace-giving beliefs. In this way, thought-form healing allows you to ward off negative thought forms from others.

Understanding how to create thought forms containing positive energy and dissolve negative thought forms will ensure that the energy near you stays in the high vibration range, allowing you to attract the life that you seek and desire. You should engage in meditative practice to help create the energies needed to dissolve any thought forms you or others create, keeping you free of malicious energy.

How Thoughts are Formed and Used by the Brain

One recent scientific study claims the brain of the average human being is responsible for generating approximately 60,000 thoughts on a daily basis. Many of these thoughts are random in nature and are for the most part not very important. Some other thoughts that arise in the brains of human beings are much more important, however, and are necessary to sustain life, control emotions, and complete daily necessary tasks.


But as incredible as it is to consider that 60,000 unique thoughts originate from the brain each day, it is equally astonishing to gain an understanding of where these thoughts originate, how thoughts form in the human, and what can be done to actively control some of the thoughts that shape the human existence.

How Thoughts are Formed in the Brain

The five senses are information gatherers that supply the data for what later becomes human thought. Once this data is collected, it is processed and transmitted by nerve cells in the brain known as neurons.


Neurons are electrically excitable and transport the stimuli collected by the five senses in a way that makes it possible for human beings to respond to their environment. One example of this process in action is when a person touches a hot stove and moves a hand immediately to separate themselves from the source of pain.


Approximately 100 billion neurons are present in the brain. These neurons are able to communicate with each other or other cells in the body through connections that are referred to as synapses. The average neuron transmits a single signal each second of the day. The brain also possesses specialized neurons that can send as many as 1,000 signals per second.

The limbic system of the brain is responsible for much of the activity we refer to as thought. This set of brain structures is centrally located beneath the cerebrum.

Despite the prominent role the limbic system plays in the formation of human thought, it can be said that all parts of the brain are responsible for forming patterns of thoughts and turning these thought patterns into action. When information is gathered through one or more of the five senses, the result is more than the presence of electrical activity in one or two neurons. In fact, multiple regions of the brain will light up in response to this stimulus. This point was missed by scientists for many years while they concentrated on the function of single neurons in forming both thoughts and patterns of thoughts.


One example an expert uses to explain this new understanding of the thought formation process involves the retina. When information is processed by the retina, a handful of neurons show strong activity, and a great number of neurons show activity that on the surface seems less relevant. 


Scientists for many years attributed the processing of the information received by the retina only to the neurons that showed the greatest activity. However, researchers now understand that all the neurons in the process are necessary to form and process thoughts from the data provided by the senses.

Synaptic pruning is another process that can alter how thoughts are formed in the brain. This process reduces the number of synapses and neurons present in the brain to allow for a more efficient configuration of the available synapses.


Individuals who want to take an active approach to synaptic pruning should understand that the “use it or lose it” principle is directly applicable to the process. Synapses that are regularly used benefit from a stronger connection. Synapses that are not used very much are the first to be eliminated when the pruning process takes place.
